Sustainable Living in Limited Space
This 4-bedroom duplex, set within a tightly packed corner of a family estate in tropical Africa, presented one of our most exciting challenges yet: how to create comfort, intelligence, and sustainability on a very limited land footprint.
Designed and delivered by Cadright Architecture, the project showcases the potential of smart orientation, water reuse systems, and integrated technology, all wrapped in a warm, modern architectural aesthetic.

Precision in Space Planning & Orientation
On this very small plot, our team focused on:
- Optimizing building footprint to preserve setback and service zones
- Orienting living spaces to receive maximum daylight throughout the day
- Aligning openings with prevailing tropical wind patterns for natural cross-ventilation
- Using vertical planning (multi-level layout) to distribute function without crowding
Despite the constraints, the result is a bright, spacious-feeling home complete with balconies, service areas, and elegant circulation.
Integrated Water Harvesting System
Given tropical rainfall patterns and limited space for deep infrastructure, we included:
- Pitched roof channels designed to harvest rainwater efficiently
- Filtration systems for non-potable reuse (flushing, cleaning, irrigation)
- Water tank placement and piping designed to minimize ground occupation
This not only reduces demand on boreholes or city water but also adds resilience in case of shortages.
Smart Home Management Integration
Unlike larger homes, smaller residences benefit even more from automation, allowing users to control essential services remotely and efficiently.
